Protecting Working Caregivers from Burnout

Emily Morgan

Marketing Specialist

Despite its prevalence, caregiver burnout is not inevitable—but it does require deliberate action to prevent it. With the right support in place, leaders can effectively bolster working caregivers and protect them from exhaustion before it’s too late.

The challenge lies in alleviating the factors that undermine caregivers’ work-life balance, such as inflexible schedules, demanding workloads, low autonomy, and inadequate support. With millions of people taking on the dual role of employee-caregiver, the constant jugging of both demands can gradually erode wellbeing, and in time compromise the organization’s performance.

As Joni Wright, Learning Solutions Project Manager at Workplace Options (WPO), asserts, the business impact is substantial: unaddressed workplace strain leads can lead to severe presenteeism and absenteeism, paving the way to burnout, claims, and workforce exit if early action is not taken.

“Burnout doesn’t just impact the individual—it affects the entire workplace,” Wright explains. “When caregivers are overwhelmed, it can lead to decreased productivity, lower engagement, increased absenteeism, and difficulty meeting deadlines.”

It’s a trickle-down effect: when overwhelmed caregivers are unable to complete their tasks, other employees are forced to compensate—creating organizational strain that compounds over time. To course correct, proactive risk mitigation is the solution. By establishing flexible policies and providing targeted caregiver support programs, organizations can address burnout at its source instead of managing its consequences.

“While employers may not be able to change a person’s caregiver situation,” Wright notes, “organizations do have the opportunity to be part of the solution by creating a supportive culture, offering flexible work arrangements, and providing targeted resources tailored to caregivers’ needs.”

Research confirms that inclusive cultures deliver a 30 percent decrease in burnout, while effective risk management yields a 12 percent increase in productivity. At Workplace Options, we help organizations put these principles into practice through dedicated training for employees and managers.

Our extensive catalogue of Global Learning Solutions (GLS) offers practical tools to help employees manage stress, balance work and caregiving, and navigate change. Psychosocial safety and risk management training, meanwhile, equip leaders to recognize when an employee may be struggling and intervene at the first signs of distress.

As Wright explains, “More recently, we’ve introduced fireside chats with mental health professionals as a way to help working caregivers feel seen, understood, and less alone in their journey.”

“Many people carry feelings of guilt and frustration when they’re struggling to balance work and family,” she adds. “These conversations help normalize those experiences and remind people that support is available.”

By addressing stigma directly and creating an environment where caregivers feel comfortable asking for help, organizations make it easier for employees to access support and address challenges before they escalate. In doing so, leaders can help caregivers protect their wellbeing while strengthening the resilience, engagement, and performance of the workforce as a whole.
