Supporting Men’s Mental Health in the Workplace

Noah Gerace

Marketing Specialist

Men’s mental health has become one of the most pressing public heath challenges of our time. According to the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), men account for a disproportionate number of suicide deaths worldwide, with the global suicide rate among men more than twice that of woman. More than half of these deaths occur before the age of 50, underscoring the devastating toll of mental health challenges during individuals’ prime working years.

Societal expectations often encourage men to appear strong, independent, emotionally resilient, and invulnerable, making it more difficult to acknowledge psychological distress or seek professional support. As a result of that, many men delay reaching out until symptoms have significantly worsened, increasing the likelihood of distress, burnout, substance abuse, or suicidal crisis.

These concerns do not stop at the door of the workplace. Employees experiencing untreated mental health challenges may struggle with concentration, engagement, productivity, and relationships, while organizations face increased safety concerns and pressure to support employees through complex situations.

While psychosocial risk management and mental health training are key to advancing suicide prevention in the workplace, support is also needed for those in acute crisis. An effective strategy requires an integrated approach that fosters psychological safe workplaces, encourages help-seeking without fear of judgment, and provides timely access to personalized care when it’s most needed.

Breaking Down Barriers to Care

Research suggests that men are more likely to engage with mental health support when it is flexible, practical, patient-led, and focused on meaningful outcomes. Rather than relying on a one-size fits all approach, organizations can encourage earlier engagement by providing personalized, evidence-based care that meets individuals where they are.

However, if men are delaying or avoiding support because they fear being judged or stigmatized, then the solution must extend beyond making mental health services available. Organizations must also create environments where help-seeking is normalized, supported, and encouraged.

An effective strategy will ultimately empower employees to seek support with confidence, trusting that they will be met with understanding and compassion instead of judgment. At the same time, it must also equip leaders and managers with the insights and skills to recognize signs of distress, intervene effectively, and foster psychological safety.

This integrated approach underpins Workplace Options’ work, combining individual wellbeing and organizational effectiveness solutions to address the full spectrum of employees’ needs—from prevention through crisis response and recovery.

WPO’s Integrated Framework

When an employee reaches a mental health crisis, timely, personalized support can make a meaningful difference. Workplace Options’ integrated response framework is designed to reduce barriers to care by providing immediate access to support that is tailored to each individual’s unique needs, preference, and goals.

Multimodal mental health support enables employees to connect with qualified clinicians—whether by phone, video, chat, or in-person. Regardless of modality, employees work collaboratively with counselors to develop a personalized care plan focused on practical solutions and measurable progress

At the same time, Workplace Options (WPO) helps organizations cultivate environments where seeking support is both normalized and encouraged. Targeted manager training and consulting equip leaders with the skills to recognize signs of distress, initiate supportive conversations, and embed psychological safety into the organization’s culture.

By supporting both the individuals and the organization, WPO helps employers respond effectively when employees are struggling while building cultures that promote resilience, trust, and lasting wellbeing.

Supporting Recovery Beyond the Initial Crisis

Responding to a mental health crisis is only the beginning. Meaningful recovery requires ongoing support that evolves with an individual’s needs and situation. Through clinical case management, Workplace Options helps coordinate care, connect employees to the right resources, and support a successful return-to-work when appropriate.

For organizations navigating traumatic events, WPO’s Rapid Response Critical Incident (RRCI) solution also mobilizes support to help employees process distress, reduce the long-term impact of trauma, and begin recovery in a safe, supportive environment.

It’s Time to Do Better

The data is clear: men are facing a mental health crisis that demands immediate, comprehensive action. Without intentional intervention, the toll on individuals, families, and workplaces will only deepen. However, organizations have the power to change this trajectory—not by waiting until crisis strikes, but by building cultures where help-seeking is normalized.

Workplace Options’ integrated framework recognizes that effective mental health support cannot be siloed. It requires both accessible clinical services that meet men where they are and organizational leadership that promotes vulnerability. When organizations commit to this integrated approach, the impact extends beyond crisis response; they prevent unnecessary suffering, support meaningful recovery, and create workplaces where all employees can thrive.
