Support to facilitate cancer survivors’ seamless return to the workplace

Challenges Faced by Cancer Survivors

An estimated 1 in 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime—more than half of whom are of working age. Yet despite this, research shows that only around half of survivors currently make a complete return to work. This presents a challenge for organizations, as the return to work journey requires integrated support for both employees and managers.

Comprehensive Support for Cancer Recovery and Workplace Reintegration

Cancer Care Compass aims to improve the return to work journey by providing affected staff with the holistic support they need to improve physically, psychologically, and professionally. By providing managers with the knowledge needed to better facilitate employees’ reintegration—organizations can effectively demonstrate their dedication to employee wellbeing and their commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive culture at work. At the heart of this program, the Coordinators of Occupational Reintegration and Adaptation (CORAT) provide employees with the comprehensive care they need to make a seamless and complete return to work.

The CORAT facilitates intake and helps customize a program that provides holistic support throughout employee’s cancer journey. The CORAT works collaboratively with the employee and, if desired, management, to establish best practices for a supportive process.

Supporting Psychological and Professional Rehabilitation

  • Establish achievable goals
  • Provide a structure of accountability
  • Offer continuous motivation and encouragement
  • Provide emotional support to address challenges related to cancer or work
  • Cultivate greater stress resilience and foster positive coping strategies

Integrating Management Support into Return-to-Work Programs

  • Employees have the option to involve managers in their return-to-work process
  • Managers have access to consultations delivered by the CORAT to identify strengths and areas for growth
  • Managers receive a Return to Work – Cancer Toolkit, which provides guidance and best practices on topics including reaching a team agreement, adapting the job position and building an effective reintegration plan.
