An employee who returns to work after parental leave is not the same person who left. They have likely enhanced some personal skills – in time management, multitasking, patience and empathy, for example. They also have some new priorities and constraints. Understanding the experience of the returning employee, including the parental guilt, is key to retaining these workers and earning their lasting commitment and engagement.
